Using digital skills to find work in Zambia
Build a small verifiable work sample and match it to real roles, not course promises.

Digital skills can support administration, sales, finance, agriculture, health and software work in Zambia. A short course is useful only when it leads to a task you can perform and explain. ZICTA provides sector context; employers set actual vacancy requirements. This guide helps first-job applicants choose evidence, protect private data, assess training claims and compare digital roles with the costs of connectivity and equipment.
Start with a job task, not a certificate advert
Read five current vacancies in a chosen function and note repeated tasks: spreadsheet reconciliation, customer records, basic data analysis, online support or code maintenance. ZICTA's information helps you understand the ICT sector, but it is not a promise of placement. A retailer may need inventory accuracy more than a programming badge. Choose one skill gap that appears in real adverts and decide how to practise it safely. TEVETA and ZAQA can help verify formal training providers and awards; a social-media course claim is not accreditation.
Turn a broad digital ambition into one target function. Collect current adverts for software support, data, design, marketing or BPO work and note repeated tasks. Choose a small project that proves one task: a cleaned dataset with checks, an accessible page, a support incident log or a measured campaign experiment. State what you built and what remains unfinished. A training centre can offer skills or workspace without promising a job; verify any placement claim against actual employer vacancies. If a remote advert is attractive, confirm that people working in Zambia are eligible and identify who would sign and pay the contract.
Make a small, honest sample
Build a spreadsheet with synthetic stock data, a simple public-information page or a short report from open data. Explain the question, input, checks, mistakes and result. Do not publish customer names, patient records, employer files or a private API key. A campus or volunteer project can be useful when you name your own contribution and supervisor. If you used a template or tutorial, say how you adapted and tested it. A hiring manager should be able to follow the sample on a phone and see the skill the vacancy requests.
A portfolio should be safe to share. Remove personal records, passwords, client files and confidential screenshots, and test links on a basic phone connection. Ask how a recruiter will assess the sample and whether an exercise may be reused. Do not install an unknown remote-access tool for a screening task. Compare a local employment offer with a foreign contract using pay cycle, currency, equipment, internet, leave and time-zone costs. If interviews do not follow, inspect the exact requirements: another generic certificate may help less than one clear project that shows the skill employers repeatedly request.
Find a real employer and avoid fee traps
A training platform's "jobs available" message is not a current vacancy. Open the named employer's own recruitment page, save the reference and check the closing date. Workzambia.net is free for applicants. Do not pay a person who guarantees placement after a digital course or requests identity scans before a verified selection step. A remote role may exclude Zambia or require hours and equipment that are not obvious from the headline. Confirm the work location and legal employer before investing in a specialised tool or certification.
Follow the submission route in the live notice, including its reference, document format and closing time. Public service jobs may use the government portal, while a company may use its own career system. Workzambia.net links to the original application and charges applicants nothing. A forwarded poster or message can be a lead, but verify it with the employer before sending sensitive documents. Do not pay a person who promises to move you onto a shortlist. Keep the advert and confirmation so that a later invitation can be checked.
Compare connectivity, pay and support
Ask whether the role provides a device, data, software licences, training, supervision and secure access. A home-based support job can shift electricity and connectivity costs to the worker. A contractor arrangement may differ from salaried employment in tax and leave. Read basic pay, currency, hours and security obligations in writing. Zambia's Employment Code Act frames relevant employment, but the actual contract tells you who pays for tools. Do not calculate value from advertised gross pay alone; compare equipment and travel costs.
Before you accept, request the legal employer, site, basic pay, allowances, hours, contract term, probation, supervisor and travel or equipment obligations in writing. Zambia's Employment Code Act provides the employment framework, but the particular contract still needs to be read. A contractor at a mine, hospital or utility may have different terms from direct staff. A higher headline wage can be less useful if a long commute, unpaid equipment or unpredictable shifts consume it. Clarify responsibilities before leaving another role.
Grow from evidence and feedback
Track applications and ask which work sample received useful feedback. Improve the underlying task rather than collecting unrelated badges. A data-entry worker can progress toward analysis by learning validation and reporting; a support worker toward technical operations by documenting repeat issues. Keep lawful examples and avoid claiming advanced competence from one tutorial. Follow real vacancies quarterly to see which tools employers actually use in Zambia. A credible digital career grows through demonstrable, secure work, not the number of course logos on a CV.
Keep a lawful record of work, feedback, training and supervisors who can confirm what you did. Choose a next role from real vacancies and identify one skill or credential that it actually requires. If applications do not bring interviews, compare your evidence with the essential criteria before rewriting everything. If interviews fail, practise explaining decisions, limits and mistakes. Training or a talent profile is only a step; neither guarantees a job. A reliable record of work is what makes the next application stronger.
