At K13,400 gross you pay K2,584 PAYE, K670 NAPSA and K134 NHIMA, which leaves K10,012. The tool rounds up to the next K100, so the figure is easy to say out loud and never falls short of your target.
How do I decide what take-home I need?
Add up one normal month: rent, transport, food, school fees, airtime and what you send home. Add what you want to save. That's the number to type. If the job means moving to another town, use the costs there, because your rent and transport will change.
Why does a raise feel smaller than it looks?
Above K9,200 gross, PAYE takes 37 ngwee of each extra kwacha, NAPSA takes 5 and NHIMA takes 1. So you keep 57 ngwee of each extra kwacha until NAPSA reaches its cap at K37,236. If you need K1,000 more in your pocket, ask for about K1,754 more.
What do people in Zambia actually earn?
The official 2025 Labour Force Survey puts average monthly earnings for paid employees at K7,025. That average is pulled up by high earners: 53.6% earned K2,700 or less, and 30% earned more than K7,500. It covers all jobs, so it doesn't tell you what one role pays. Use it to see how far your figure is from the middle, then read the advert and ask.
Questions people ask
Should I give a gross or a net figure in an interview?
Say gross, and say so clearly. If you say K10,000 and mean take-home, you may be offered K10,000 gross, and that leaves K8,074 by the same sum as this tool. To keep K10,000, ask for K13,400.
Can I be paid less than the minimum wage if I agree to it?
Where a minimum wage order covers your job, it sets the lowest basic pay. Our minimum wage page lists each category and who the orders leave out.
Should allowances count toward what I ask for?
They count toward gross pay and they're taxed. But gratuity, overtime and NHIMA are worked from basic pay, so ask how the offer splits the two before you agree.
