Here's a lower example. On K8,000 gross, the first K5,100 is free of tax, the next K2,000 is taxed at 20% (K400) and the last K900 at 30% (K270). That's K670 PAYE. NAPSA takes 5%, which is K400, and NHIMA takes 1%, which is K80. You take home K6,850.
What are the PAYE bands in Zambia for 2026?
ZRA charges nothing on the first K5,100 a month, 20% on the next K2,000, 30% on the next K2,100 and 37% on everything above K9,200. We found no official 2027 Budget text on 2 November 2026, so recheck these in January 2027.
- First K5,100: 0%
- K5,100.01 to K7,100: 20%
- K7,100.01 to K9,200: 30%
- K9,200.01 and above: 37%
Does NAPSA come off before PAYE?
No, and many calculators online get this wrong. ZRA says that since 1 January 2018 it's no longer necessary to deduct pension contributions before working out chargeable income. So PAYE is worked on your gross pay, and NAPSA and NHIMA come off separately.
Why does NAPSA stop rising at K37,236?
NAPSA's 2026 ceiling is K3,723.60 a month, split into K1,861.80 from you and K1,861.80 from your employer. Your 5% reaches that figure at K37,236 gross. On K50,000 you still pay K1,861.80, and PAYE and NHIMA keep rising. Your employer's own 5% must never come out of your pay.
What if part of my pay is allowances?
Type your basic pay in the second box. NHIMA is 1% of basic pay, not gross, so if your K15,000 is K10,000 basic and K5,000 allowances, NHIMA is K100, not K150, and your net is K10,974. PAYE and NAPSA stay the same. If you leave the box empty, the tool treats all your pay as basic, so the answer can only come out a little low.
Questions people ask
How much tax do I pay on K5,100 in Zambia?
No PAYE at all. The first K5,100 a month is taxed at 0%. You still pay NAPSA of K255 and NHIMA of K51, so you take home K4,794.
Are allowances taxed?
Yes, ZRA says all allowances and cash benefits are taxable, with a short list of exceptions: Labour Day awards, ex gratia payments, medical and funeral expenses, councillors' sitting allowances, and benefits that can't be turned into cash, such as free housing owned and provided by the employer.
Is overtime taxed?
Yes. ZRA lists overtime, leave pay, commission and bonuses as emoluments, so they count as pay for PAYE in the month they're paid.
Does the Skills Development Levy come off my pay?
No. It's 0.5% of gross pay, and the law says the employer bears it, not the employee. That's why it isn't in this sum.
My payslip doesn't match. What should I check?
Look for loans, union dues or a medical scheme, and check whether your employer has split basic pay and allowances. Then ask payroll which earnings it used. Our payslip guide walks through each line.
